Meet Jim Whitaker
Jim Whitaker
Master Carpenter & Founder of The Carpenter's Guide
Jim Whitaker is a third-generation carpenter and the founder of The Carpenter's Guide. With more than 28 years of experience in woodworking and construction, Jim has built everything from custom cabinetry and furniture to entire homes and commercial structures. He completed his formal apprenticeship through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, earned his master carpenter certification, and spent two decades running his own custom woodworking and general contracting business before launching The Carpenter's Guide to pass on the craft to the next generation. Jim specializes in traditional joinery, timber framing, and fine woodworking, and he's passionate about preserving hand-tool skills in an increasingly mechanized trade. He lives in Vermont, where his workshop is never short of projects.
About The Carpenter's Guide
Jim Whitaker learned carpentry the old-fashioned way — standing beside his grandfather in a shop that smelled like sawdust and tung oil, learning to read the grain before he could reach the workbench. The Carpenter's Guide carries that tradition forward. In an age of disposable furniture and quick-fix renovations, we're here to celebrate and teach the craft of doing it right.
